Classement des langues sino-tibétaines par nombre de locuteurs

Les langues sino-tibétaines comptant le plus grand nombre de locuteurs au monde sont le mandarin, le yue (cantonais), le wu, le min, et le jin (jinyu). Les langues sino-tibétaines ayant le moins de locuteurs sont – entre autres – le mauphu, le lamu, le pela, le chashan, et le sunnami.

Regroupant 410 langues vivantes (445 au total dont les langues éteintes) et 1 434 500 598 locuteurs natifs, les langues sino-tibétaines désignent une famille de langues parlées principalement en Asie de l'Est (Chine, Taïwan, Hong Kong, Macao), en Asie du Sud-Est (Birmanie, Thaïlande, Laos, Malaisie, Viêt Nam) et en Asie du Sud (Bhoutan, Népal, Bangladesh, Inde).

L'unité linguistique des « langues sino-tibétaines » est encore sujet à controverse en raison des difficultés à reconstituer avec précision une proto-langue commune. Toutefois, la relation génétique entre les langues chinoises, le tibétain, le birman et d'autres langues – proposée pour la première fois au début du XIXe siècle – est désormais largement acceptée par la communauté scientifique. Selon la théorie la plus partagée, le proto-sino-tibétain trouve son origine dans le nord de la Chine aux alentours du 4e millénaire avant l'ère chrétienne.

La répartition géographique actuelle des locuteurs des langues sino-tibétaines résulte de l'expansion historique respective des trois groupes avec le plus grand nombre de locuteurs, à savoir le chinois, le birman et le tibétain. Ainsi, ces trois langues aux longues traditions littéraires ont peu à peu remplacé un nombre inconnu de langues autochtones antérieures. En termes de classification interne, les langues sino-tibétaines se divisent en deux sous-ensembles principaux :
